SAN DIEGO, CA — There are new skilled construction workers in San Diego County, thanks to a new program at Southwestern College.

The first graduating class of the South Bay college's High Road Construction Apprenticeship Readiness Program graduated last week. The free, 12-week training program is part of a new partnership between the college, the San Diego County Building and Construction Trades Council and the San Diego Workforce Partnership.

"My journey began when I enrolled in the program at San Diego Continuing Education," student Jose Luis Pereda said. "However, the timing didn't work out, as the classes were during the day. Luckily, I was informed about the program opening at Southwestern College, which offered evening and weekend sessions. I registered, was accepted, and the program not only became a means to find work but also a vehicle to enhance my trade knowledge."

The program, which launched last fall, aims to create opportunities for under-represented populations to enter apprenticeship programs and secure union construction jobs.

During the class, students learned about the construction industry, tools of the trade, construction health and safety, Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules and regulations, construction-related math, blueprint reading and eco-friendly design and construction methods.
