FRENCH CAMP — On Friday, nearly a dozen incarcerated men became the first class to graduate from the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office MC3 Jail Apprenticeship program.
The Sheriff’s Office partnered with the San Joaquin Building Trades Council to offer a four-week Math Boot Camp and a six-week Apprenticeship Readiness Program at the Honor Farm on South Wolfe Road in French Camp.
The class is designed to give incarcerated persons the necessary skills and knowledge to become competitive applicants for registered construction apprenticeships throughout the county.
The program includes OSHA-10 and Red Cross certifications, as well as nine situational certificates. Specific classes completed and program certifications include:
• Construction basics modules 1,2,3, and 4
• Silica in the workforce
• Red Cross- CPR/AED and First Aid
• MC3 Graduation certificate
Upon completion and release from the San Joaquin County Jail, graduates will be given all the items they used in class, such as work boots, a work belt, basic construction tools, and a hard hat. Graduates have already met with San Joaquin County WorkNet for job placement assistance.
The SJBTC has 19 affiliated organizations involved in a joint apprenticeship program, which is the path to journeyman. They earn while they learn and get paid.
Graduates were also were enrolled in other classes such as cognitive behavioral interventions for substance abusers, social skills, GED or high school diploma classes, and drug testing.
