Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) - A new construction pre-apprenticeship program has prepared a new wave of individuals for the workforce.
The first cohort of participants in Training Rochester Adults in Construction (TRACS) graduated on Wednesday.
The 8-week program trains people on the basics of union construction and provides certificates and resources needed to be ideal candidates for employers.
"It's amazing! It's not just a job, it's a career," said Shamar McCray, TRACS Graduate. "Learning about the things these people do and how they contribute to life. I just want to be able to externally show that.
Graduates also learn CPR and first aid training and receive a laptop and a stipend for the duration of the program.
The program works in collaboration with Rochester Careers in Construction, Inc., The Urban League of Rochester, the Rochester Building and Construction Trades Council, and North American Building Trades Union (NABTU).
